Rules + Format for the Competition

The Matches involve various match play competitions between players selected from two teams. The matches will consist of foursomes matches, four ball matches and  singles matches. The winner of each match scores a point for their team, with ½ a point each for any match that is tied after 18 holes.

A foursomes match is a competition between two teams of two golfers. The golfers on the same team take alternate shots throughout the match, with the same ball. Each hole is won by the team that completes the hole in the fewest shots. A fourball match is also a competition between two teams of two golfers, but all four golfers play their own ball throughout the round rather than alternating shots, and each hole is won by the team whose individual golfer has the lowest score. A singles match is a standard match play competition between two golfers.

The matches typically take place over three days, and can be between 12 and 28 matches depending upon the number of players and the appetite for more that 18 holes in one day. The first day there are four ball matches and foursome’s matches. The second day is typically the same schedule. The third day there are singles matches, when all team members play. The captain can select any players for each of the rounds of play over these two days. The winning team is determined by cumulative total points. If the teams are tied on points after all three days play the two Captains can decide to either declare a draw or have a sudden death play-off with a selected team of two players over a hole or holes decided by the match official.

As in all matches the Stableford scoring system will be in place to create a “level playing field”. This will be further levelled by use of both USGA indexes and R&A handicap system.

Only a player from an opposing team can concede a put.

The Winning points total will vary depending on the size of the Competing teams.

The designated “Match Official” decision will be final in any disputes.

An Example of a Competition involving 6 players on each team would be;

Day 1
3 x “Foursome” matches in the morning (3 points to play for)
3 x “Four ball” matches in the afternoon (3 points to play for)

Day 2
3 x “Four ball” matches in the morning (3 points to play for)
3 x “Foursome” matches in the afternoon (3 points to play for)

Day 3
6 x “Singles” matches (6 points to play for)

In this Match 9 ½ Points would win the Contest

Some Match Terminology;

Foursomes: Two teams of two golfers each competing in an alternate shot format. One player tees off on the odd numbered holes, the other on the even, and they alternate shots until each hole is completed.

Four-ball: Two teams of two golfers competing in a best-ball format. Each golfer plays his own ball and the best score of the two counts for the team.

Halved: A hole is halved when players or teams finish the hole with the same score. A match is halved when the players or teams finish 18 holes tied. If a match is halved each team is awarded 1/2 a point.

Concedes: A player or team concedes a shot when they do not make their opponent or opponents finish out the hole.

Dormie: A match is dormie when one player has to win the remaining holes just to earn a tie. For example, If Player A is leading Player B 4-up after 14 holes, Player B must win holes 15-18 outright just to earn 1/2 point for his team.

All square: Means that the match is tied.
